The King only has spare time.
His pockets are overflowing
with it. He wishes he could give it
to the old man shambling
in front of the castle gates.
He can’t. He can only watch
through the stained-glass window.
He knows what’s coming
and can’t do anything about it,
can’t do anything to…
Pretty medieval manuscript of the day shows a siege as it nears its end. The walls have been breached. Crossbow bolts are loosed. Cannon are loaded. Yet everything is strangely stilled and stilted. There is none of the abject misery and starvation that Froissart aludes to in his Chronicle.

Bruce Munro has fitted 5,000 glass spheres in the grounds of the Holburne Museum in Bath. It is not the first time Munro has indulged his dream of a field of lights. he first created a similar exihibition at the V&A Museum in London in 2004, but has also made other versions including a 10-acre display at Long Knoll Field in Wiltshire and at the Eden Project in Cornwall in 2008/2009.

A South German purple damask robe, circa 1300. I can’t get over the fact that “royal purple” is in fact a very reddish color. The gold-silk embroidery on the bottom panel & sleeves is stunning. The link takes you to the medieval collection. Scroll down to find a link to the large version of the robe.
